What to Love about Size 3 Thread and a Little Secret

Here's what I love about size 3 pearl cotton thread. First it is really BIG so it shows up on your art work. It also has a subtle sheen that attracts the eye. It's pretty hefty so you'll need a size 1 embroidery needle when working with it.

Size 3 pearl cotton thread  is perfect for Couching down with another thread. Use a size 12 or 8 pearl cotton in similar colors or make a striped line when couching with a complementary color.

It may not be easy to stitch through regular quilters weight fabric with Size 3 thread, but it stitches through felt like butter. (Not that I do a lot of butter stitching anymore.) And when you stitch felt you want a bold thread that sits on the surface of the fabric rather than something that disappears into the felt like a wimpy little kid.

And now here's a little secret that I'm sharing with you and no one else.

I have stacks and stack of felt sitting on a shelf in my studio. Everyday I walk past the felt and avert my eyes. It has been 5 years since I purchased this huge stack of felt and have only made the one little flower you see above. There, now you know my shameful secret!

Well the one lone flower is pretty dang cute! I confess to having a similar stash of wool. Perhaps I'll go make a flower! (Or go stitch up some butter).

Surely soon makes use of cloth ... the good thing is to be around when needed.
Thanks for the tips!
If you want to get to my blog I've had a fabric inspired by bright colors I see on his blog.
Thanks again for being so generous in showing their experiences and knowledge!

I also have a stash of wool waiting to be made into the perfect project. Maybe we need to organize a wool stitch along!

I like how the thread shows up so nicely, I need to try the larger threads. I won some more wool felt, so when I get that, I will have to try some felt projects, the threads will be great to use with them.

Thank you for sharing about the thread!
I understand about the felt. I have a package of hand dyed fabric in gradations of color across the spectrum. I paid a huge price for it about 8 years ago. It is so "precious" to me, I keep putting off using it thinking that I will want it for something more "special" than the current project! It will probably still be there when I die. My sons will snatch it up to use as rags in the garage or something! Horrible thought!

Laura, don't feel guilty! I have a great philosophy on purchasing fabric. Please hop over to my blog & read about buying fabric from a fabric lover's perspective: http://sewconsult-ponderings.blogspot.com/2009/05/originally-written-in-12.html

Thanks for the tip about #3 thread. I have never thought about using it. One more thing to buy and store in my embroidery thread box. I take it out every so often and pet the threads. Maybe, I can use some of them if you have a "felt along" in September.

I pull out my wool felt in the summer; it's too hot in my sewing room so I bring it to the family room (Air conditioned!) and sew on little things all summer. The ornaments and creations I sell at a local quilt museum. LOVE sewing through felt/wool with good thread. What brand do you use?
